As of November 1, 2024, the judge vacancies in the high courts of southern India are as low as 4%, while the vacancies in other regions are as high as 49%. The collegium's timely recommendations for judge appointments are a contributing factor to the success of the southern states.
Here are some examples of judge vacancies in the high courts of southern India:
Kerala HC: Has a vacancy of 4%, which is the lowest among all big HCs
Madras HC: Has a vacancy of 11%
Karnataka HC: Has a vacancy of 19%
In contrast, the Allahabad HC, the country's largest HC, has 49% of its judges' posts vacant.

The collegium system is the selection mechanism for the appointment and transfer of the judges of the Supreme Court and high courts in India.
