The Supreme Court of India has instructed the Central Government to draft a comprehensive policy for the management and protection of sacred groves across the nation, emphasizing their environmental significance.

"The protection and preservation of sacred groves is not merely an environmental necessity but a cultural responsibility," the Supreme Court stated, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive policy. Highlighting the Piplantri village model, the bench noted, "Community-driven initiatives like these demonstrate how social, economic, and environmental challenges can be addressed cohesively, transforming both mindsets and landscapes."

This directive was issued in response to petitions concerning the sacred groves of Rajasthan.

The bench, comprising Justices B.R. Gavai, S.V.N. Bhatti, and Sandeep Mehta, recommended a nationwide survey to identify and demarcate these groves while ensuring their boundaries can accommodate natural growth.

The court also underscored the importance of safeguarding these areas from human activities like deforestation and agriculture.

During the judgment, the court referenced a verse from the Bhagavad Gita to highlight the interconnection between nature and human consciousness.

Additionally, it commended Piplantri village in Rajasthan for its initiative of planting 111 trees for every girl child born, a practice that has significantly transformed the environment and addressed societal issues such as gender bias.

This model has led to improved biodiversity, a higher water table, economic growth through sustainable practices, and a reduction in female foeticide.

The court further emphasized the importance of replicating the Piplantri model nationwide, suggesting that governments provide financial support, enabling policies, and technical assistance to promote similar community-driven initiatives for sustainable development and gender equality.
