Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud addressed the common criticism against the judiciary being "unelected and unaccountable" by emphasizing that judges, despite not being elected or directly accountable to the public like politicians, are entrusted by the Constitution to safeguard equitable resource distribution and protect individual rights.
This criticism, often raised during significant rulings such as the quashing of 2G spectrum and coal block allocations or the striking down of the NJAC, was a focal point in his lecture at the Jigme Singye Wangchuk event in Bhutan.
He stressed that public trust is essential for the judiciary, which operates independently from public opinion, unlike elected officials who are directly accountable to voters.
While judges do not derive their legitimacy from elections, maintaining public confidence is key to upholding the judiciary’s credibility.

यह आलोचना अक्सर 2जी स्पेक्ट्रम और कोयला ब्लॉक आवंटन को रद्द करने या एनजेएसी को निरस्त करने जैसे महत्वपूर्ण फैसलों के दौरान उठाई गई थी, और यही बात उन्होंने भूटान में जिग्मे सिंग्ये वांगचुक कार्यक्रम में अपने व्याख्यान के दौरान मुख्य बिंदु के रूप में प्रस्तुत की।
उन्होंने इस बात पर जोर दिया कि न्यायपालिका के लिए जनता का विश्वास अत्यंत आवश्यक है, जो कि सार्वजनिक राय से स्वतंत्र रूप से कार्य करती है, जबकि निर्वाचित अधिकारी सीधे तौर पर मतदाताओं के प्रति जवाबदेह होते हैं।
हालांकि न्यायाधीश अपनी वैधता चुनावों से नहीं प्राप्त करते, लेकिन न्यायपालिका की विश्वसनीयता बनाए रखने के लिए जनता का विश्वास बनाए रखना महत्वपूर्ण है।
