Justice Ravi Malimath, born on May 25, 1962, comes from a distinguished family in Karnataka. His paternal grandfather, Justice S.S. Malimath, was a freedom fighter and a key figure in Karnataka's unification efforts, serving notably as Chairman of the Inter-State Border Dispute Committee for Belgaum and Kasargod.
His maternal grandfather, Dr. S.C. Nandimath, was a respected scholar in theology and linguistics, receiving a Doctorate from the University of London and contributing significantly to education in Northern Karnataka.
His father, Dr. Justice V.S. Malimath, was a highly esteemed Chief Justice of both the Karnataka and Kerala High Courts, known for his legal reforms and leadership in various judicial committees.
Justice Malimath earned his Commerce degree from M.E.S. College, Bangalore, and his Law degree from Sri Jagadguru Renukacharya College of Law. He began his legal career in the chambers of Sri Shivraj Patil, who later became a judge of the Supreme Court of India. Practicing in various areas of law, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court on February 18, 2008, and became a Permanent Judge on February 17, 2010. During his tenure, he delivered over 44,000 judgments and held several administrative roles, including President of the Bangalore Mediation Centre and the Karnataka Judicial Academy.
Justice Malimath was transferred to the Uttarakhand High Court on March 5, 2020, where he served as the Acting Chief Justice from July 28, 2020, implementing significant judicial reforms and delivering 1,501 judgments in 149 days. He then served in the Himachal Pradesh High Court starting January 7, 2021, where he introduced various judicial reforms and disposed of 1,511 main cases in 105 working days.
On October 14, 2021, Justice Malimath was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
