The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) met with electronic appliance manufacturers on Saturday to address concerns regarding warranty periods starting from the purchase date rather than the installation date.

Nidhi Khare, CCPA's chief commissioner, explained that current manufacturer policies result in a reduced warranty period for consumers, who can only begin using products after installation.

The meeting included representatives from major companies like Reliance Retail, LG, Panasonic, Haier, Croma, and Bosch. It covered two types of products: 'plug-n-play' items such as irons and microwaves, which don't require installation, and items like air conditioners and refrigerators, which do.

The discussion emphasized the need for consumer rights protection and the adoption of global best practices in India. The feasibility of starting the warranty period from the installation date was also considered, along with measures to prevent abuse of this system and ensure consumer interests are protected.

Consumer rights as defined under Section 2(9) of the Act, includes the right to be informed about the quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard and price of goods, products or services, as the case may be, so as to protect the consumer against unfair tradte practices
