The devastating train accident in Balasore, Odisha, in June 2023, claimed the lives of nearly 300 people and injured hundreds more. While the Indian government provided initial compensation to the affected families, many victims and their families are still struggling to cope with the financial and emotional aftermath of the tragedy.

A significant number of victims have approached railway claim tribunals to seek additional compensation, citing inadequate initial payouts. They argue that the initial compensation is insufficient, particularly for families who lost their sole breadwinners.

One of the major challenges faced by victims is proving their presence on the train during the accident. The railway authorities have demanded proof of travel from some victims, leading to delays and denials in compensation claims.

This has further compounded the suffering of those already affected by the disaster. Despite the challenges, the Indian Railways has disbursed a substantial portion of the promised compensation. However, the process has been slow and arduous for many victims, who are still waiting for the full amount.

The Balasore train disaster serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of railway accidents and the importance of adequate compensation for victims and their families. As the legal battles continue, it is hoped that justice will be served and that the victims will receive the support they need to rebuild their lives.
